Butyric Acid - Colon Support supplies a supplemental source of butyric acid (as calcium & magnesium butyrate), the primary fuel of colonic cells. Butyric acid is a naturally-occurring 4-carbon fatty acid formed in the healthy colon from the fermentation of dietary fiber by friendly bacteria.
Butyric Acid - Colon Support is a source of Butyric Acid as calcium/magnesium butyrate. It is a low molecular weight, short-chain fatty acid with numerous biological properties, and is especially beneficial in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Butyric acid is the main energy source for colonocytes (the cells that line the colon), thereby supporting the integrity of the intestinal lining. Butyrate is also involved in many other processes including immune-regulation and inflammatory processes. It has been demonstrated to decrease concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin 8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). It has been suggested that Butyrate has a beneficial influence on the hypersensitivity of intestinal receptors, which results in a decrease on intra-intestinal pressure. In a recent study published in Nature, researchers demonstrated that butyrate acts as an epigenetic switch that boosts the immune system by inducing the production of regulatory T cells in the gut. They showed that butyric acid acts on naïve T cells to promote their differentiation into Treg cells, which are important for the containment of excessive inflammatory responses.
In the body, butyrate is produced by the bacterial fermentation of resistant (difficult to digest) carbohydrate and fiber. However, due to our SAD (Standard American Diet) with its increased intake of highly processed, low-fiber foods with high simple sugar content, low levels of butyrate production in the intestinal lumen has resulted. Therefore, supplementation with Butyric Acid - Colon Support may be a good, safe and effective recommendation.
